If you’ve ever wondered how to stand up straight or improve your posture, you’re not alone.
Growing up, my mom would say it without hesitation.
“Stand up straight.”
“Shoulders back.”
“Suck in that gut.”
I can still hear her say it.
At the time, I thought she was just correcting my posture.
Now I realize she was teaching me something deeper.
How you carry yourself matters.
Life has a way of bending you.
Long days at a desk.
Phones in our hands.
Stress that settles in our shoulders.
Responsibilities we carry without even realizing it.
Before you know it, you’re slouching.
Not just physically.
Emotionally.
Spiritually.
Lately, I’ve noticed it in myself.
I’ll catch my reflection or feel the pull in my shoulders, and without thinking, I straighten up — like I’ve heard her say all my life.
So much so that I ordered a posture corrector — from Fit Geno Posture Corrector to help retrain my shoulders and remind my body what standing tall feels like.
It just arrived.
But even ordering it felt like a decision.
A decision to stop shrinking.
Standing straighter isn’t just about appearance or standing tall.
It’s about living upright before the world — and humbly before God.
We are called to stand firm in who we are.
And at the same time, we are called to fall to our knees in surrender.
There is strength in standing upright.
And there is strength in kneeling low.
Both are posture.
Both shape us.
And sometimes, we need help strengthening what we can’t see.
Maybe the device will help my shoulders remember.
But I know my heart always needs alignment.
To stand when I need courage.
To kneel when I need grace.
To carry myself with confidence — and with humility.
And maybe my mom knew that all along.
Stand up straight.
When It’s Hard to Stand Up Straight
⏸️Before you move on, pause for a moment.
Where in your life have you been slouching — physically, emotionally, or spiritually?
Is there an area where you need to stand a little taller?
Or maybe… an area where you need to fall to your knees instead?
Posture shapes more than our shoulders.
What posture are you carrying today?
This reflection begins our Posture & Strength series
A journey through standing, strengthening, surrendering, balancing, leaning… and learning what it means to be held.
Continuing the Journey
Standing tall is only the beginning.
Because strength doesn’t just come from how we carry ourselves outwardly…
it begins deeper—at the center.
In our next reflection, Core Strength: Rebuilding from the Center, we explore what it means to rebuild strength from within.
