A Lesson in Honesty: Why Small Choices Matter in Everyday Moments

How shopping turned into a powerful reminder about honesty, faith, and why the small choices we make every day truly matter.

It’s funny how life tests you… not always in big ways, but in the small, everyday moments.

Lately, it feels like we’ve been getting a few of those.

It’s in these small, everyday choices that we’re reminded how much doing the right thing really matters.

It started at one of our favorite Chattanooga nurseries.
We were walking around, enjoying the day, picking out things we loved… and somehow walked out with a rock for a fairy garden that we never paid for.

We didn’t realize it until later.

But we knew.

So we went back.

Because even something small… still matters.

When Small Choices Test Us

Then came Lowe’s.

We picked up knockout roses—such a good deal it felt like we couldn’t pass them up. I thought we had nine. Mom said ten. The associate rang up eight.

We noticed later.

Another moment. Another choice.

And then yesterday…

Back at the nursery again, I bought Mom a beautiful peony for an early Mother’s Day. It was pricey—but she’s worth it. Truly.

It was almost as beautiful as she is.

But on the way home, something didn’t feel right.

Looking at the receipt, we realized the peony had been rung up as a lily—$19.99.

And that wasn’t just a small difference.

That was a big one.

So… we turned around.

Not because it was convenient.
Not because anyone would have known.

But because we would have known.

The girl at the counter even said, “Maybe it’s on sale.”

And for just a second, that would’ve been easy to accept.

Mom even laughed and said, “If that’s the price, I want another one.”

But deep down, we knew that wasn’t it.

So we made it right.

They corrected it—and even gave us a small discount for coming back.

But that wasn’t really the point.

Because this wasn’t about a rock.
Or roses.
Or even a peony.

It was about the little tests.

The quiet ones.
The ones no one else sees.
The ones where it would be easy to look the other way.

But those are the moments that shape you.

A Lesson in Faith and Integrity

And lately, it’s felt like more than coincidence—like gentle reminders we can’t ignore.

Little nudges.
Little moments where we’re being asked to choose what’s right… even when no one is watching.

Because faith isn’t just something we talk about—
it’s something we live out in the everyday.

In honesty.
In integrity.
In the small decisions that don’t feel big at the time.

And maybe that’s what we’re learning right now—

God cares about the little things too.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” — Luke 16:10

Because we both said it—

If we hadn’t gone back and made those things right…
those plants probably wouldn’t have made it either.

Not because of anything we did with our hands—
but because of what we would have carried in our hearts.

There’s something about doing what’s right that brings life to what you’re growing—
in flowers and in your faith.

It’s a reminder—just like in our recent journey of Diet Coke Free—that the small choices shape something bigger.

And maybe that’s the reminder in this everyday moment—

We’re going to be tested.
Not always in big ways… but in the small, ordinary ones.

And those are the ones that matter just as much.

One choice at a time. 🖤

With love,
