Held Together: Finding Strength When You Can’t Fix It

When life reaches a point where nothing can be fixed, the hardest step may be learning to admit I need help. This reflection explores the quiet strength found in being…

Two hands gently holding another set of hands, symbolizing comfort, support, and being held together through faith and connection.

There have been moments when neither of us could do anything to fix it.

It’s hard to admit we need help in moments like that.

Mom and I have both been there.

Physically. Mentally. Spiritually

When the pain is there.
When the body won’t cooperate.
When nothing you try makes it better.

And that’s hard.

Because you want to fix it.

You want to do something.
Anything.

But sometimes…

There is nothing to do.

No adjustment.
No movement.
No solution.

Sometimes all you can do is sit there.

And hold them.

Or be held.

And it hasn’t just been one-sided.

For Mom, it looked like something different.

Deciding to leave her home.

Letting go of a space filled with years of life. Deciding to make a new home with me.

A knee replacement that at times was very difficult—physically and mentally—requiring help, encouragement, and the comfort of being held by both me and God.

Moments of feeling disconnected from family in ways that are hard to explain.

And sometimes, realizing that relationships you thought were deeper…

Weren’t as close as you once believed.

And for me…

It’s been my own set of things.

Things I never expected to carry.

But that’s not really the point.

Because no matter what the situation looks like…

There are moments when neither of us can fix what the other is feeling.

No amount of strength helps.
No amount of effort changes it.

We can’t steady it.
We can’t carry it.

We can only sit there.

Together.

When we begin to realize that what we need most…
we already have—each other, and God to hold us.

🌿 Held by More Than We Can See

There is a quiet comfort in that… even though everything isn’t suddenly better.

It’s because we were never meant to hold everything together on our own.

There is a strength that isn’t ours.

A steadiness that doesn’t depend on how we feel.

A presence that doesn’t leave when we have nothing left to give.

Scripture reminds us:

“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
— Colossians 1:17

Even when our bodies feel weak.

Even when our hearts feel heavy.

Even when we don’t understand what’s happening…

We are still being held.

Whether it’s standing up straight…
or strengthening our core…
finding our balance…
or just leaning on someone beside us…

it all leads us here—

to the quiet surrender of being held.

I used to think strength meant pushing through.

Fixing things.

Holding it all together.

Now I’m learning something different.

Sometimes strength looks like sitting still.

Sometimes it looks like holding someone’s hand.

And sometimes…

It looks like letting go of the need to fix anything at all.

⏸️ Let me gently ask you…

Is there something in your life right now that you’ve been trying to hold together on your own?

Something you’ve been trying to fix…

When maybe you were never meant to?

Maybe the hardest strength of all is learning to admit we need help.

Because the truth is…

We’ve had to get help with things we can’t do on our own.

We’ve gone to physical therapy for knees, shoulders, for balance and core.

Things we thought we could just push through…

We couldn’t.

Sometimes we have to reach for help beyond ourselves…

especially when it comes to our health.

You don’t have to carry it all.

You don’t have to fix it all.

You are held.

Even here.

And there is a quiet freedom in that.

The freedom to stop striving.
The freedom to stop trying to hold everything together.
The freedom to rest in the hands of the One who never lets go.

You are not just getting through this.

You are being carried through it.

The Lord your God is carrying you, just as a father carries his son.
— Deuteronomy 1:31

💌 Join Our Journey

If this reflection felt a little too familiar… you’re not alone.

We are learning, too, that strength doesn’t always look like doing more. Sometimes it looks like sitting still. Sometimes it looks like holding on. And sometimes it looks like trusting that even when we can’t hold everything together…

We are still being held.

If you want to continue on our journeys, join us. We send a gentle note whenever a new post goes live — no clutter, no noise — just meaningful reflections, shared moments, and encouragement for whatever season you’re walking through.
